Award-Winning Work
As the Arts and Culture Editor at Real Change, I won eight awards from the Society of Professional Journalists from 2022 to 2024.
SPJ's Northwest Excellence in Journalism Awards cover the journalists working in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. The competition is one of the largest of its kind in the country.
2024: Second place, print page design
I won second place for my design for an article about a new coffee shop opening in Capitol Hill that provided a community space celebrating Latina/o art and culture. I echoed the natural shapes and colors in my design, bringing the soothing vibes all through the page.

2024: Second place, editorial writing
I won second place for my editorial entitled "Institutions support normality, leaving the rest of us behind," published by Real Change on June 26, 2024. The illustration published with it is an edit I did of a popular poster usually presented in black and white and with an unfortunate misspelling.

2024: Second place, graphics and illustration
In 2024, Real Change artist Madeline Kernan's work received second place in the graphics and illustration category. The cover image, which I commissioned and worked with Madeline on, depicts a family's home from inside, as a bulldozer waits to destroy their tenuous peace.

2023: First place, print page design
In 2023, I won both first and second place in the print page design category, officially sweeping the category for the second year in the row. This delightfully sunny spread about a Seattle-area activist, the Transit Fairy won me first place. I followed her lead and brightened up the page as much as I could without distracting from her message. My choice of photos also helped focus on her work as much as on her, which aligns with her ethos.

2023: Second place, print page design
I won second place in print page design for this piece about a local woman's mutual aid pantry receiving threats and vandalism. By pasting the messages atop an image of the food pantry, I showed how cruelty can sometimes feel larger than life.

2023: Second place, graphics and illustration
An illustration by Real Change artist Lara Kaminoff won second place in graphics and design in 2023. I was proud of my collaborative work with Lara on this piece, as I designed the background the cat sat against; I had been worried about the possibility of the cat's fur smudging onto plain newsprint, and I think the background served to frame and set off Lara's art very well.

2022: First place, print page design
In 2022, I won first and second place in print page design, taking both awards in the category the first year my work was entered. I had never designed a newspaper professionally before my position at Real Change, but my work was highly regarded from the beginning. Real Change had not received an award in this category since 2013.
The award-winning spread is of an article about how a Real Change vendor helped repeal an unjust law. This piece features infographics and charts I created, along with screenshots I found through research and careful watching of surveillance videos.

2022: First place, graphics and illustration
In 2022, Real Change received first place in the graphics and illustration category for an illustration by Real Change artist Royce McLean. I used typography to echo Royce's innovative way of reflecting the image to show how quickly things can change, while questioning bias.
